Obituary of Susan H. Jones Susan Hart Jones, daughter of Lee and Margaret Ruegamer Hart, was born on October 18, 1938, in Indianapolis, Indiana and died in Buffalo, New York on March 15, 2026. Her beloved husband of fifty-seven years, Nicholas Loftin Jones, pre-deceased her in September 2017. She is survived by her children Geoffrey and wife Lisa Jones, Michael Jones, Elizabeth Newton and husband Adam, Katherine Jones and wife Renee Tripp, her eleven grandchildren Collin, Brannon, Owen, William, Elias, Charles, Lilith, Kate and husband Jason, Kristopher and wife Jessica, and her great-grandchildren Declan. Kyleigh, and Kamden. Susie graduated from Collinwood High School in Cleveland, Ohio in 1956 where she was a Girl Scout and a cheerleader. She received her Bachelor of Arts from Ohio University in 1960 where she met her future husband. She majored in History, was a member of Phi Mu sorority, and was elected ROTC Military Ball Queen in 1958. She was a dedicated and loyal wife throughout her fifty-seven years of marriage to Nick. They were married on June 25, 1960, at Christ Church, Shaker Heights, Ohio. After living in Indianapolis, Indiana throughout the 1960s, she and Nick moved their young family to Rochester, New York in 1970. A great deal of her life was dedicated to public service as a non-profit professional with a career as a grant writer for Children Awaiting Parents and the Girl Scouts of Western New York. Her many volunteer activities included leadership in the Cathedral Arts Society in its efforts to preserve the Indianapolis City Market in 1969. She volunteered at the Rochester Memorial Art Gallery and was a long-time member of the Junior League of both Indianapolis and Rochester. Susie was an active member of Christ Church Cathedral of Indianapolis until 1970 and then St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Rochester for nearly fifty years where she served in various Vestry leadership positions. At St. Thomas, she spearheaded its literacy program in Rochester Public Schools. She loved her family and never missed a child’s or grandchild’s hockey, soccer, or softball game, ballet performance, orchestra concert, or theater production. She and Nick took frequent cross-country road trips to visit family, and they both hosted and attended countless holiday celebrations and weekend get-togethers. They explored North America and Europe on numerous occasions, often as family vacations. Susie was a bundle of creative energy. She nourished her family and friends with gracious manners and delicious home-cooked meals. She was an excellent seamstress often making clothes for her children. She loved gardening and was very knowledgeable about horticulture. She loved polite English television, Jane Austen, Downton Abbey, and A Room with a View. She was the driving force in bringing order from chaos in raising four very active and rambunctious children, surviving the noise of bagpipes and drums, and flying hockey pucks, soccer balls, and ballet shoes. In retirement, she loved her Book Club and Chatter Box membership. Her life was a blessing, and she will be greatly missed, but her spirit will live on in love through her family. A memorial service will be held at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 2000 Highland Avenue, Rochester, New York 14618 on Saturday, May 9 at 10:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Susan’s name to the Episcopal Relief and Development Fund, 815 Second Avenue, New York, NY 10017.
